God IS good.
No matter how many different ways I think to start this story, my heart keeps coming back to that.
I went through a divorce in April of 2014. My life changed in ways that I never expected. I mean, who gets married thinking they will get a divorce? In all of the ups and downs, I always had hope that I would love again, be loved again and get married again. Fast forward three and a half years, and that’s me in that photo with my new husband. A man who I cannot believe exists, much less has vowed to love me for the rest of my life.
He has a unique story of his own, as he has journeyed through two battles with Cystic Fibrosis. His daughter’s fight ended in March of 2015 at the age of 22 and his son, now 23, is living with the disease.
We found each other (at work!) at a point in our lives where it seemed like God was taking things away. But I think sometimes things are taken away so we can have clearer vision of what we really want and need. I know that has proven to be true for me.
What God allowed me to see is that He wasn’t done with me or my capacity to love and be loved. In fact, He had only scratched the surface. There was so much more in store.
Behold, He makes all things new.
Those were the opening words to the homily at our wedding Mass. Our celebrant (who is a special friend of ours) reminded the congregation that God didn’t stop creating in Genesis and He constantly seeks to re-create, re-store and make all things new.
Now our marriage will (if we continue to remind each other of this) proclaim the Good News of a God who loves, forgives, endures and restores. What a special honor.
As we get closer to a new year and look to the areas of our lives that need recovery, restoration or renewal, remember that God didn’t stop creating in Genesis; He is constantly seeking out YOU and looking to make you a better version of yourself – as a mom, friend, daughter, wife and Christian, because God is good.
We were able to share our love story on our station’s website. If you’re up for a little dose of sappy romance, click here.
